About Craig Gunn

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Gunny a true Teacher!
— Phil Jones, National Player Development England Rugby League

Craig Gunn has spent more than 30 years coaching athletes, mentoring coaches and designing learning environments in sport.

From grassroots participation to elite performance, Craig’s approach is built around a simple belief:

Coaching is teaching.

Great coaches don’t just organise drills. They create environments where athletes engage, think and learn through the game.

Where it Started

Craig began coaching while still playing senior rugby league in Queensland.

Like many coaches, he started by copying the sessions he experienced as a player. But over time he noticed something important.

Many training sessions looked organised, but very little learning was actually happening.

Players stood in lines.

They waited their turn.

They repeated drills that removed the decisions of the game.

Craig began exploring a different approach.

A Different Way of Seeing Coaching

Instead of focusing on drills, Craig began designing game environments where athletes could explore, interact and discover solutions themselves.

His sessions became known for:

• constant engagement
• game-based learning
• questioning and reflection
• athletes solving problems through play

Some observers jokingly called it “Gunny madness.”

But those who experienced it recognised the structure behind it.

Craig continues to work with athletes, coaches, schools and sporting organisations, helping them design training environments that maximise engagement, learning and enjoyment.

After more than three decades in coaching, his goal remains simple:

Help coaches create better learning environments and keep more young people enjoying sport.
